In the past few weeks Minnesotans have started to tip-toe into the best locavore season. Whether you use 50, 150 or statewide as your local food line, June through September are by far the easiest months to eat local in the North Star State. Minnesota’s growing local food network was recently measured against other states’, and our locavores measure up well. When the 2012 Locavore Index was released last week, Minnesotans had something to celebrate. A brand new measure introduced by New England-based Strolling of the Heifers, the rankings use farmers’ markets and CSA’s…

Rhubarb Crisp
Local Food Rocks15 May 2012 | 9:00 amIt's rhubarb season!Actually, rhubarb season started in April so I'm a little behind in this announcement, but nonetheless it is in season.Over the years this is one ingredient I've come to really enjoy. I usually cook it down into some kind of sauce. Sometimes I keep the sauce more on the savory side to use on things like pork or I go a bit more sweet to enjoy over something like vanilla ice cream.A few good things to know if you're not familiar with rhubarb: When buying rhubarb choose crisp stalks and, generally speaking, the deeper the red, the more flavorful the stalks. Medium-size stalks…

25 Things in my 25th Year
11 May 2012 | 10:05 amI have a song from preschool stuck in my head today: “Today is someone’s birthday, this I know. Today is someone’s birthday, we like her so. Today is someone’s birthday, who could it be? Today is Amy’s birthday-ee” Yup. Today I turn the big whopping 25. That’s about as much as I want to talk about it too. Last year when I wrote my birthday post “24 Things to Happen in my 24th year”, I had the very same feelings about getting older as I do this year. You just have to add 1 to 24 and subtract another year from the time I have left to cram… -
Salades
8 May 2012 | 9:05 amThe kitchen partner and I received this postcard in the mail from a fellow Postcrossing.com user last week. It came all the way from The Netherlands just for us. I love opening the mailbox to find postcard about food. Sometimes we even receive recipes or special suggestions for ingredients. Perhaps this is a hint about what I should be planting in the garden this weekend! Will you be planting any special “salades” varieties this year? What local greens will be on your table this summer? -
Springtime Omelet with Morels and Green Onions
7 May 2012 | 1:34 pmI’m back after an entire week away from the blog. The kitchen partner was in Israel for the past 7 days which meant my world had “Out Of Order” sign all week. His trip helped me appreciate how much hard work and effort he puts into making our little household run. Without someone to eat my experiments, do my spell-checking, and help with the dishes, I was just lost. Every time I sat down at the computer or picked up the camera, I’d think about how much I was missing him. Moral of the story? Hug the people who motivate you to get out of bed in the morning. Tell them… -
Find it Local Friday: Minnesota Grown Directory
27 Apr 2012 | 9:33 amTaking a break from spinach today to help announce the release of the 2012 Minnesota Grown Directory. It’s one of my favorite days of the year and a terrific way to kick of the summer growing season. Why is the Minnesota Grown Directory worth a Find it Local Friday of its own? It’s a one-stop shop for answers to all your locavore questions: How can I be a Minnesota Locavore? Listings for 945 sources for locally-grown food and products around the state. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s comprehensive list can help you find whatever your locavore heart desires. How do…

Smoked Trout and Potato Salad Recipe
10 May 2012 | 8:00 amAs things sometime turn out, the Accidental Locavore had just finished reading a recipe for smoked trout with potatoes from April Bloomfield’s A Girl and Her Pig when my husband started talking about how much he liked smoked trout, a factoid I filed away for future reference. A week later I was at the last [...] -
The Best Fried Chicken in New York
7 May 2012 | 8:00 amFried chicken has become one of those trendy food items in New York, if not elsewhere. The Accidental Locavore isn’t sure why. Do you think it’s because it’s comfort food? Or that it’s relatively inexpensive (even at high-end restaurants)? Today it’s time to put a stop to the endless arguments as to who makes it [...] -
Does Grass-Fed Beef Make Great Pastrami?
3 May 2012 | 8:00 amAs you loyal readers of the Accidental Locavore know, last year I was a happy participant in the Charcutepalooza challenge. One of the enduring results was that I now fairly regularly make duck confit, bacon, pastrami, etc. And even though I haven’t done much cooking in the past few weeks (well, I’ll admit to a [...] -
Auto Bleue: Top Three Reasons Why it’s Not “Toute Simplicite”
30 Apr 2012 | 8:00 amIt looked simple enough…when the Accidental Locavore was in Nice last spring, we noticed small groups of electric cars near tourist areas, ready to be rented. After spending a ton of money on the standard rental car and parking (not to mention gas!), this looked like a great alternative. We loved the idea of being [...]

2012 CT NOFA Food & Farm Guide
27 Apr 2012 | 8:30 amThe CT NOFA Farm and Food Guide has to be one of my favorite local food resources. It's a wealth of information. It lists CT NOFA’s 125 member farms and supporting businesses alphabetically by county. To be listed in the guide, farms must be certified organic or sign the "Farmer’s Pledge" agreeing to specific sustainable and ethical farming practices with the general goal of improving the land’s environmental and agricultural quality. All the supporting businesses sell products from member farms or offer services to them. The guide also includes information about food storage, winter… -
Fresh Food For All
25 Apr 2012 | 10:31 amI am really excited by a Citycenter Danbury newsletter I received about a fundraiser dinner held last week to benefit the Danbury Farmers' Market Community Collaborative (DFMCC).It appears all the work the collaborative has done to improve access to fresh food inspired a prominent local business owner and community advocate to issue a challenge: He will match dollar for dollar (up to $5,000) any donations made to the DFMCC for the 2012 Market Season from now until Wednesday, May 2nd.Often we hear that one of the challenges to improving health in this country revolves around the issue of… -

National Garlic Day
19 Apr 2012 | 9:53 amI just found out that April 19th is National Garlic Day. This is most definitely a holiday made for me! (Of course, I could argue that every day is garlic day in our household.)In honor of one of my favorite ingredients, here are a few fun facts:Known as "the stinking rose" garlic is actually part of the lily family and a cousin to onions, leeks, chives and shallots. (www.about.com)Chicago got its name from the American Indian word for the wild garlic, "chicagoua", that grew around Lake Michigan . (www.foodreference.com)No one in the British Royal Family eats garlic as as not to…
